About This Service

A Staircase Must Be Structurally Sound Before It Can Be Architecturally Exceptional

A staircase carries significant structural and safety requirements, tread depth, riser height, handrail height and baluster spacing are all governed by Florida Building Code, and the stringer must be assessed before any renovation begins. B8 Home approaches staircase projects with a structural evaluation first, then material specification, fabrication and installation. The result is a staircase that is safe, code-compliant, dimensionally perfect and finished to the same standard as the rest of your interior.

Why B8

Why Structural Assessment and Precision Craftsmanship Define the B8 Staircase Standard

Staircase renovations that fail, squeaking treads, cracked risers, movement in the structure, almost always trace to a stringer or substrate problem that was not assessed before the new material was installed. B8 begins every staircase project with a full structural evaluation of the existing framing, identifies and corrects any deficiencies, and then proceeds with material installation in the correct sequence. Every tread is set level, every riser is flush, every nosing is consistent. The result is a staircase that is structurally sound, code-compliant and finished to a standard you will notice every day, for the right reasons.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to replace stair treads and risers?+
Replacing treads and risers on a standard 13 step staircase runs about $2,500 to $6,500 in 2026, or roughly $190 to $500 per step installed. Red oak treads with paint grade poplar risers sit at the low end. White oak, walnut and porcelain treads sit at the high end. Removing carpet, tack strip and staples and leveling the existing stringers is included. A new handrail, newels and balusters are quoted separately.
How long does a staircase renovation take?+
A tread and riser replacement on an existing staircase takes 3 to 5 working days, plus 2 to 3 days when treads are stained and finished on site. A full staircase rebuild takes 1 to 2 weeks. Floating or open riser staircases run 6 to 10 weeks because steel stringers and glass or cable railing are fabricated to measured field dimensions. We stage the work so you keep access to the second floor most of each day.
What are the maximum stair riser and minimum tread depths in Florida?+
Florida Residential Code allows a maximum riser height of 7.75 inches and requires a minimum tread depth of 10 inches, with a 36 inch minimum stair width and 6 feet 8 inches of headroom. The tallest and shortest riser in a flight cannot differ by more than three eighths of an inch, and that tolerance is what most often fails inspection on retrofit work. We measure and shim stringers so the finished flight holds it.
How much do floating stairs cost to build?+
Floating and open riser staircases typically run $10,000 to $35,000 installed in 2026, depending on stringer type, tread material and railing system. A mono stringer steel design with white oak treads and cable railing is the common mid range choice. Glass panel railings and cantilevered treads with no visible support cost more because they require engineered steel embedded in the wall framing. Every floating stair we build is engineered and permitted.
Can carpeted stairs be converted to hardwood or porcelain treads?+
Yes, and it is one of the most requested upgrades in Boca Raton and Winter Garden homes. We strip the carpet, pad, tack strip and staples, then either cap the existing construction grade treads with retrofit treads or replace them outright. Porcelain and large format tile treads are popular in South Florida for durability, and they need a bullnose or mitered edge plus a slip resistant finish. Expect 3 to 5 days on site.
Do I need a permit to rebuild or relocate a staircase in Florida?+
Yes for anything structural. Changing the rise, run, layout or stringers, adding or closing a stair opening, or building a new staircase all require a building permit and inspection in Broward, Palm Beach, Orange and Osceola counties, and often an engineer sealed drawing. Cosmetic work such as capping existing treads or swapping balusters within the same footprint usually does not. B8 Home Remodeling pulls every permit and handles inspections as part of the project.
